Course goals/Competences: Basic knowledge in this area. Choice, dimensioning and design of overhead lines. Construction, components, and fundamentals on overhead lines design and checking the thermal load of power cables.

Total available number of classes: 180

Curriculum: Introduction, Scope. Basic terms and definitions. Elements of the overhead lines: (conductors, isolation, towers, grounding), their role and characteristics. Mechanical calculations: influence of environmental and climate parameters, temperature, wind load, additional ice loads. Catenary and parabola, sag, mechanical stress (tension) of the conductors. Sag-tension equation and iā€™s solving. Critical span, critical temperature, boundary span, ideal span. Dimensions of the towers: clearances to ground and between wires, passing over objects on the ground. Protection zone of the ground wire. Grounding of towers, types of grounds. Lightning overvoltages and protection against lightning. General principles of overhead lines design. Choice of the way, permitted spans of towers, over tension, sag-tension tables, templates for graphical design. Computer aided design. Power cables: construction, role, types of cables, heating and cooling processes on cables. Choice of type and cross section ā€“ principles and criteria. Laying and mounting the cables, their connection and termination. Operation and maintenance. New trends and new technologies in cable technique.
